The viewer rating soon, in fact, that the characters are grouped into a triangular pattern whose base is none other than the paving of the front, and the two sides are clearly marked: left, it follows a line from the shadow cast by faithful who prepares, bottom left, climb the steps of the Temple to a peak that is in heaven, right at the top and center of the table on the right, across the triangle passes through the middle of the corridor defined by the man in green and orange up the steps and the old bearded man in blue coat that goes down. This space is strongly framed by two powerful sets of vertical lines: the left two columns of the Temple gate marble ocher-yellow, and gray pillar at the end, right, facades Profile of the two palaces, one yellow and one white: all signs that accentuate the verticality of the representation, and therefore the transcendence of the event represented.

perspective leads first look at the center of the triangle, which is on the hand of St. Peter and the powerless, in a gesture reminiscent of spouse and father of Adam in the fresco Michelangelo in the Sistine . Peter is wearing yellow and blue colors celestial perhaps Poussin and he wanted to allude to his authority as Prince of the Apostles, and the miraculous power, so divine, he has at this very moment ;; Jean is shown in pink and light green, that is to say red and green mixed white, which could symbolize his youth, and which in any event, the overall balance, while stressing the role of Peter, painted in pure colors that strike more. Several processes contribute to further focus attention on the miracle and its translation gesture. The royal blue gown and mantle of the old dark gray faithful left separating the foreground, the event from the outside world. The left hand of St. John, lifted skyward, pointing exactly toward the top of the triangle, and returns twice, thereby causing divine miracle.

In total, the work spread over three levels. Foreground and down, we are witnessing the daily life of the Temple at the ninth hour: the characters are many, but yet so far gathered in a triangle, a symbol of the sacred in Poussin. At the top of the stairs in the center of the table and the action takes place by which the apostles healed the paralytic and show both the omnipotence of God and the mission entrusted to them. Finally, following the line through the foot of the lame and the left hand of St. John, the gaze is towards the top of the triangle which is at the end visible from the sky, that is to say, invisible to the place where Christ is that Peter is the vicar who is lead author of a miracle. At this point, the pictorial representation is beyond itself, to evoke a transcendence that is not representable.
